Educational Programs

For over 30 years the Cecil County SPCA has been working to improve the lives of the animals of our county. In a continuing effort to promote understanding of, and respect for the animals, we have developed an educational program targeting audiences from Pre-K through Senior Citizens. We offer age-appropriate presentations on a wide variety of topics from basic animal care and safety to environmental education.

The Cecial County SPCA Education Programs are offered free of charge , Donations to help the animals would be appreciated. If you would like additional information on presentations available through us, please call the Shelter 410-398-9555 and ask for Jeanne Deeming, Executive Director.

Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:

Domestic Abuse Assistance

Violence has become one of the defining characteristics of our age. We are confronted daily with its images in the news and its affects on our lives. Public awareness of the animal cruelty/human violence connection is essential. It is know that the “first strike against an animal may be the first strike in a lifetime of violence”. Violence cuts across categories. Animal cruelty is often an early sign of violent tendencies that will be acted out eventually against people. The youth who tortures cats may grow up to harm or kill people. The parent who abuses the family pet may also be abusing the children. The child who hurts an animal may already be a victim of, or a witness to, family violence. Many studies have documented the connection between violence against animals and violence against humans, and studies have shown that animal cruelty in a family is an indicator of serious problems in that family.

The Cecil County SPCA, Inc. in conjunction with the Cecil County Domestic Violence Rape Crisis Program has formed an interagency coalition and coordinate antiviolence efforts that better protect the animals if victims of violence. This coalition encourages cross reporting and manages cases to provide a safe haven for dogs and cats of those individuals in their program who feel their animals are in jeopardy. In order to participate in this program, the social worker or case manager will contact the SPCA and arrange for the animal’s protection. The confidentiality of this arrangement is important to provide the animals safety and security. This provides the victim of violence peace of mind when they seek refuge for themselves, their children and their pets.

Peace of Mind Project

The Cecil county SPCA, Inc. will board or foster a dog or cat if a mental health consumer in our County is unable to care for their animal because of a medical or mental health crisis. The shelter is contacted by a social worker, case manager, psychiatrist, physician, therapist or nurse in order to make arrangements for the care of the pet. This process is to provide us with the ability to differentiate between an individual who may want to have their pet taken care of when they are not in crisis or may wish to give up their pet.

For many mental health consumers, their pet is not only a companion but also a life support and a member of their family. This endeavor allow for mental health consumer’s pets to continue to have consistent, quality care at a a time when their owner is unable to provide it. This is a service that is immeasurable in importance to the consumer. Our involvement in this endeavor provides consumers with the Peace of Mind to continue to receive necessary treatment and at the same time know that they will be reunited with their loving companion as soon as possible.
