Although there are a number of ways to help the CCSPCA the number one thing that you can do is one of the easiest, be a responsible pet owner. Many of the animals that are turned to the shelter are often mistreated, abused, and neglected. This is heartbreaking to the staff of the shelter and to animal lovers in general. We try to offer assistance to pet owners whenever and wherever we can, so here are a few items that we would like to pass along that will help you and your pet(s) have a happy and healthy relationship.

Spay & Neuter At THE SPCA PET WELLNESS CLINIC

All pets should be spayed or neutered period. Local shelters can accommodate only a small portion of unwanted pets. Pet overpopulation continues to take lives daily. Most of these animals are under 3 years of age, but older pets are also given up. Call 410-885-2687 for the low cost Pet Wellness Clinic.

Here are a few facts for you to consider:

• 10-20 MILLION animals are euthanized every year; this doesn't include strays or those who die in the streets.
• Every 1.5 seconds a shelter animal is killed.
• One cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 cats in 7 years - 10 MILLION in 10 years!
• One female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies in six years
• Only 1 animal out of every 10 born in the USA gets a good home.
• Accidental births (cats and dogs who have owners who just didn't get them spayed/neutered) are the MAIN CONTRIBUTORS to the animal overpopulation problem.

Still not convinced? Perhaps you fall for one of these excuses:

• I don't want to put my pet through such a difficult and stressful operation.
  
  The typical sterilization operation, at most, involves an overnight stay at your local animal hospital or veterinarian. Your pet will be back to normal in only a few days with no lasting side effects. After the operation you will actually find that your pet is more relaxed, and less likely to experience mood swings associated with breeding seasons. Weight gain, another common concern, can occur with some animals, but with a careful diet and exercise this is rarely an issue. In all cases you should consult with your veterinarian before and after your pet's operation.
  
  
• I can't afford to spay or neuter my pet.
  
  The cost to spay or neuter your pet is generally less than $100. If this is beyond your means contact a local veterinarian (see our list of local clinics and veterinarians) to discuss a reduced rate or a payment plan that will meet your budget. In the long run it is much cheaper to sterilize your pet since he/she will, in general, be much healthier and female animals are less likely to experience uterine infections or breast cancer, and male animals have a reduced incidence of prostate problems and eliminate the possibility of testicular cancer. In addition, unneutered pets have a tendency to spray and/or soil their living quarters. i.e. your home, this can be costly, not to mention embarrassing.
  
  
• I want to breed my pet to make extra money.
  
  Unless your pet is a purebred animal and you plan on spending considerable time and money on your new "hobby" don't even consider this activity before talking to several reputable breeders to see what you are getting into. Take a look at our Breeding Decision Tree to help you make up your mind.
  
  
• I want my children to experience a live birth.
  
  We often hear this excuse and it is a very poor one! Putting your pet through an unnecessary pregnancy for the benefit of a learning experience is a cruel punishment. Please read "The Miracle of Life....." by Dr. Barry Taylor, DVM before you consider teaching your children in this manner. If this is still your goal, check with your public library about video tapes or DVD's on this topic, or contact a local farm with livestock to see if they would be willing to allow you and your children to witness a live birth.

Routine Vet Visits and Vaccinations

Your pet should see a veterinarian at least once a year for a routine checkup, and more often if it is a senior animal. In addition, all pets should be on a regular vaccination and medication program.

Care for Animals that will be kept Outside

We encourage pet owners to make housepets of their animals. This way the animal owners get much more companionship and better all round relationship with their pet (click on this link to read about keeping your pet as an indoor companion). However, we realize that sometimes this is not desirable or possible. If your animal will spend considerable time outside make sure he/she has adequate fresh water at all times, and has sufficient shade to stay cool during the summer months, and warm insulated living quarters in the winter months. In addition, in the winter months your pet will require more energy to stay warm and active, make sure you feed him/her regularly and consult your veterinarian concerning the amount and type of food that will be best for you pet. We also ask that you keep in mind that if you do keep your pet outdoors it must be on a leash or confined to your property per The Cecil County Animal Control Ordinance, otherwise a find of $25 to $500 may be issued against you! Do not force our Animal Control Officers to be the Dog Catcher that we all know and dislike!

A comment about Barking Dogs

One of the problems we here about is the nuisance barking dog. Most dogs bark, and often for very good reasons. But few things will alienate you from your neighbors more quickly than letting your dog bark excessively. Nuisance barking is usually defined as howling, yelping, or barking that is frequent or habitual.

Why Do Dogs Bark?

• Dogs bark to communicate.
  Dogs, like people, are social animals. Scolding or yelling at your dog when it barks will not make it stop. In fact, your dog may interpret your yelling as particpationin the "conversation".
• Dogs bark out of boredom.
  A dog that is frustrated or bored my bark just for something to do.
• Dogs bark to get attention.
  Because they are social animals, dogs crave attention. If the only attention a dog receives is punishment for barking, it will bark to received even that attention.

How can I keep my dog from barking excessively?

• Train your dog to bark only when appropriate.
  Interrupt inappropriate barking by distracting the dog. Drop a plastic soda or pop bottle full of pennies or rocks somewhere near it. When it stops barking, praise it in a pleasant voice by saying "Good dog, that's enough".
• Spend time playing with your dog every day.
  Dogs that do not get enough interaction with people are more likely to bark out of boredom or to seek attention.
• Give your dog chews and toys.
  Keep your dog occupied when you can't be home.

You can prevent nuisance barking before it starts by making sure your dog is happy, healthy, and well trained.
