DONATE TO HELP THE ANIMALS

We are your local Animal Rescue

There’s a place in our community where the hungry are fed, the homeless are sheltered, and the abandoned are given care. It’s the Eastern Shore Animal League, and for 30 years plus we provided comfort and care for our community’s unwanted animals.

We offer many other services for pets etc. and their owners and even for people without pets. To do all this, we rely on the support of people like you. Here are a few ways you can help animals, especially those at our rescue:

Check our "How You Can Help" page for more ways you can help your shelter

Violence has become one of the defining characteristics of our age.  We are confronted daily with its images in the news and its affects on our lives.  Public awareness of the animal cruelty/human violence connection is essential.  It is know that the “first strike against an animal may be the first strike in a lifetime of violence”.  Violence cuts across categories.  Animal cruelty is often an early sign of violent tendencies that will be acted out eventually against people.  The youth who tortures cats may grow up to harm or kill people.  The parent who abuses the family pet may also be abusing the children.  The child who hurts an animal may already be a victim of, or a witness to, family violence.

Many studies have documented the connection between violence against animals and violence against humans, and studies have shown that animal cruelty in a family is an indicator of serious problems in that family.

The Eastern Shore Animal League, Inc. in conjunction with the Cecil County Domestic Violence Rape Crisis Program has formed an interagency coalition and coordinate antiviolence efforts that better protect the animals if victims of violence. This coalition encourages cross reporting and manages cases to provide a safe haven for dogs and cats of those individuals in their program who feel their animals are in jeopardy.  In order to participate in this program, the social worker or case manager will contact the Eastern Shore Animal League, Inc. and arrange for the animal’s protection.  The confidentiality of this arrangement is important to provide the animals safety and security.   This provides the victim of violence peace of mind when they seek refuge for themselves, their children and their pets.

faqs

1.   Q: How can I adopt an animal?

A: Patrons interested in adopting an animal are invited to observe and visit with the animals during visiting hours. Once an animal is selected, the patron fills out an application and is then interviewed by an adoption counselor. (The ESAL reserves the right to visit a patron's home in order to decide upon adoption approval.) Upon approval, the patron may take the new pet home! The ESAL also reserves the right to refuse an adoption. The most common reasons for refusal usually involve landlords, animals wanting to be given as a gift, a history of past pets that have not had proper care , or a difference in philosophy over how a pet should be kept.

2.   Q: How long do you keep the animals?

A: The ESAL has no maximum amount of time that the animals are kept. An animal will be kept as long as it remains healthy and is deemed adoptable. We do the absolute best we can for every animal that enters our rescue.

3.   Q: How can I make a donation to the ESAL?

A: The ESAL accepts donations of money, time and supplies. Your tax-deductible donation of money may be brought or mailed directly to our office and may be given in honor or memory of a pet or other loved one. Our Memorial program allows persons to Remember Their Pets or a Loved One for a specified donation amount. A walnut or brass plaque will be hung on the memorial wall in our lobby, with a message of the sponsor's choice. There are numerous ways to donate your time. For further information, please contact the ESAL Director at (410) 398-9555.

Because we operate on a minimal amount of funds, the ESAL depends greatly on the generosity of the community If you are interested in donating, please contact The ESAL Director at 410-398-9555.

Also go to our "How You Can Help" page for more details.

4.   Q: Why should I donate my time and money to the ESAL?

A: The ESAL is dedicated to the humane treatment of all animals. We strive to educate the public in the proper care of their pets, including the necessity for spay/neuter & identification. We do this to not only reduce the population and better our pets' health, but to avoid animals ending up in the rescue to begin with. Once the animals are here, volunteers are crucial to provide a caring environment and see that good homes are found. None of this could happen without donated time and funds. We depend on the generosity of the local community for continuing this service and our many programs that exceed the basic care of our animals.
