Hi I adopted a beautiful German Shorthair Pointer named Clara from you in Sept. 2004 . I wanted to give you an update. She was diagnosed with end stage of renal failure in early Oct. 2004 and given her last stage diagnosis, most dogs live 4-6 weeks. With the miracle of modern medicine and allot of love , I wanted to let you know we just had to say good-bye to her last weekend. (5-7-2005) She was one of the most patient souls I ever met. She was nearly always tolerant of the Sub-Q fluids and responded well to her meds. She gave hugs regularly & loved her back yard. I know your staff really cared for her and wanted to let them know she had a really good 6 months she would not have had otherwise. She was an amazing girl and I miss her terribly. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to love such a wonderful animal. Laura K. Donovan |

Hi...we adopted Mini on Saturday morning ( 1-21-06 ) and I just wanted to say THANKS! Even though she is very fragile looking....she's a ball of spunk and just sooooooo.... sweet! She came home and took right over. She's bossing the cats around and is spoiled already. We changed her name to Isabella (Bella for short) She appears to be housebroken...hasn't had not one accident. (Yeah!) She is so different from the 130 lb black lab I lost after 9 years. We are feeding her Iams, Wellness, and mixing in a little yogurt and cottage cheese at your suggestion. She's eating like a little piggy. We bought her a pink coat and a purple bed (to match the harness and leash we purchased from you), not to mention, lots of toys. I can't remember the young ladies name who helped us but PLEASE thank her for us. We were very skeptical about taking Bella because of her appearance but I'm so glad we did. She definitely fits right in and is already loved very much! Here's a couple pictures we have taken..... Thank you Kathy, Vanessa, and Dustin and Kellie |

5-5-06 Hello everyone. I wanted to give you a quick update on how Paris did her first night in her new home. It would appear she is not used to being walked to do her business as we have now walked her last night and this morning and there is no action on her part. But that certainly is something to work on and the only negative about her! She was perfect when applying the DMSO to her belly, we gave her the heartworm monthly pill and she ate it without any hesitation...well she spit it out but quickly picked it up and chewed. We introduced her to a pig's ear treat and she proudly walked around with it until she realized she could chew it. Ah youth, so much to learn! She is incredibly sweet, followed us around the house with quiet enthusiasm, and knew all about sleeping in a bed but being very calm and quiet about it. My husband would always walk our first lab, Bailey, to the elementary school in the morning to say hi to the custodian, teachers and any children that may already be on site. Paris ( we may be calling her Gilda as we are both professional, classical singers and both have performed "Rigoletto") was perfect and enthusiastic about meeting everyone including the kids. The custodian and one of the teachers got teary-eyed as they miss our Bailey but were so happy to see us with another beautiful blonde lab to keep the a.m. tradition going. Thank you for posting her picture on the web and making it possible for us to adopt her after the sudden loss on April 24 of our beloved 11.5 year old lab Bailey. We will take great care of Paris and keep you updated on her progress with us. Candace 5-12-06 Hello Everyone!!! The update on Paris.... Definitely Gilda now. She is an absolute JOY!!!! How lucky we were to have found each other and I feel sad for the people who lost her. We walk her to a kids' ballpark where the little league baseball teams play and it is so obvious she had been with children that played ball/fetch with her. She is unbelievably friendly to everyone and wants to be with people - a perfect companion dog. I can't imagine having to let her go even after 9 days and believe her prior owners must have not known how to find her. She is very smart, she should become a utility/agility dog. We try to keep her out of our living room with a nice oriental rug so we put her in the family room and have a baby gate up to discourage exiting the room. Well, she didn't really care for that so yesterday she decided to jump the 4' to get out of the room and go upstairs to a guest staying with us a few days who was able to sleep in. That little rascal cleared that "fence" as if she were a horse! If she was a horse I believe her career would be of an open jumper or event horse!!! I would have to say, "Look Out Fair Hills, here we come!" In the short time we have had her she has learned quite a bit about walking on a leash - we are attempting to get her to heel and stay heeled on the left side ESPECIALLY since I do take her up to the barn where I board my horse and it is vital she stay on the left side. She doesn't particularly care for the horses at this point as I think they are so big she is afraid of them. She has stopped growling at them but if they put their noses down to sniff her she tries to nip their faces....something else to work on. I am certain she will learn proper doggie etiquette very quickly. She now sits on command, heels on leash changing tempi, she is really consistent sitting with the silent hand signal and she is starting to get the circle around the body to heel when seated looking at you in the front. Very clever. Medical Update: her belly lump from over-exertion after being spayed is slowly going down. I have continued applying the DMSO and hopefully in another week it will be completely gone. Thank you so much for allowing us to adopt her. Again, she is not our wonderful Bailey we lost, but she is such a different spirit I believe Bailey is smiling in approval. I know Brian and I our. Hi, I am not sure who I need to send this email to so I was hoping someone could respond and guide me to the right person. My husband and I adopted Figueroa the Great Dane about 3 weeks ago. I know Fig's former owner loves and misses him very much and I wanted to some how let her know he doing very well. We saw Figueroa's Birthday picture in the Cecil Whig yesterday and I had to respond to her some how. I wanted to ease her mind and let her know he is doing great. He is a wonderful puppy and we love him very much. Fig is part of our family and fits in our family like a puzzle piece of where our last Great Dane (Chelsie) was. We had to put Chelsie to sleep in January and she was almost 11 years old. We miss her dearly. Everyone at the SPCA has told us it was meant to be and so has our family and friends. We also believe it was meant to be. Our family is whole again. We celebrated his birthday with him and I know he is not suppose to get table food, but I made him a special birthday treat. After all it was his birthday. A big homemade hamburger was his special treat. He loved it. Fig gets along well with our other dog Shannon. They are best buds now and have started a bond with each other. Fig looks up to Shannon (not literally ha-ha) as an elder and she has been very patient with him. Shannon is 11 years old and very playful for her age. They are good for each other. Fig brings out the puppy in Shannon and Shannon teaches him the mature side of things. (I attached a picture of them playing Tug of War and it is so funny to watch them) Please tell Figueroa's former owner she did wonderful job raising him. He is a very smart and well mannered for a puppy and we thank her for all that she has done for him. We thank her for giving us something back that we have so dearly missed. I have taken a couple of pictures and I was hoping someone could forward this email to Figueroa's former owner. Please feel free to edit what you need to for the confidentially rules. Thank you so much, Donna |

Yukon started obedience classes last week and has a new doggy friend, Shelby. She's a golden retriever and is just under a year old. There are about ten doggies in the class. "I've been working very hard on the heal command... I think I've just about got it.. but I really do not like to sit at all... that's just too much work" Yukon's family consists of 'daddy', 'mommy', 'grandma', and four kitties, Baby Cat, Kitty Kitty, Demi, and Onslow. Baby Cat and Kitty Kitty like Yukon most of the time, niether of them grew up with a dog. Demi and Onslow are still not too sure about Yukon. They were both found as kittens and grew up with Katie, our old English Setter who passed away in March. |

7-2007 Dear Cecil County SPCA, I am just writing to thank you so much for adopting Dylan to me. He is such an exceptional dog. He has been easy to train, affectionate, and generally wonderful. We have a great time, and I think he likes Philadelphia. He loves going to the dog park and playing with other dogs. Over Christmas, he had great fun visiting my parent's cottage, and was a perfect house guest. Everybody compliments him on his good looks and spunky personality. I absolutely adore him and can't really imagine living without him. He has lost all his extra pounds (he loves to run here) and looks great. I attached a couple of pictures, one from Christmas and one from our new apartment (I don't have a camera, so the selection is limited). Hope all's well in Maryland, Diana |

Daisey at the SPCA
Daisey at her new home

8-2007 John: Daisey and I made it home. She rode beautifully in the car. She slept the entire time. We drove straight home without stopping. It took us about 5 hours. Macy greeted her and there was not a snip nor snarl. She sniffed at Mylo the cat, so all is well there. She's got her sniffer working overtime--so much new stuff. I think that she is going to fit in beautifully, and she has already charmed my entire family. I note that she is holding her tail down. I'm suspecting it is in deference to Macy. I'll watch for it. I'll send some updated photos and progress reports. I know that she'll be very happy here. Warm regards, Leisa Dear Cecil County SPCA: Here are a few pictures of Daisey. She is settling in well. She is a slobber bunny to be sure. I've never seen a dog drink water using her entire head as a shovel! I've been exercising her in the yard on a retractable leash. Tell Jack that Daisey is being very mindful of her leash boundaries. I cannot believe how incredibly loving and playful she is. This behaviour is a testament to the care that she has received at your facility. Shy? I'm not sure how she was labeled shy. She is eager to make friends with everyone she comes in contact with. She's so happy that she's been mouthing overly much. It's not a problem that cannot be corrected, and she is conscious of being gentle. She just cannot help herself in her delight. She's been eagerly (if not unsuccessfully) hunting dragon flies and butterflies today. The bird feeder, outside my office window is intriguing to her. The windows are 6' x 2' so she gets a full view outside. She lay quietly inside by my chair, like my previous setter, Greta, did. As you can see from the pictures, she's very happy. I appreciate having the opportunity to adopt this beautiful dog. I'll send periodic updates. Feel free to use this email in any way to promote your work. I'm also sending a copy to Catherine Harold. Warm regards, Leisa

10-17-2007 We love William. He is such a good boy. It's been a week now that we have had him. He is so smart and such a quick learner. We have taken him for a couple of neighborhood walks and plan on taking him to obedience school. I think it would do him some good. He has had an opportunity to be around children and babies and done very well with them. He is very curious but stays out of trouble most of the time. He is very quiet too. We have only heard him bark a few times. Toby, K.K. and William are quickly becoming great friends. All and all we made a great choice and William will become an excellent pet. We couldn't be happier. 11-15-2007 Jeanne and John, It’s been about a month since we picked William up and we are very happy that he is part of our family now. He’s a real lover. All he really wants to do is be right next to you on the couch or the bed. And he is very persistent about it. Once you let him up, good luck getting him down. He is full of energy, of course, and loves to run on the beach. We take him to a nature preserve where he can run freely and he is truly happy. Toby also likes having him around. Adds some new life to the family. I haven’t seen Toby want to play like this in years. So thanks again and we’ll be in touch. Guy and Conchi |

Good morning Susan! I wanted to let you know (before I post to the whole list) what happened in Cecil County. (Sounds like a western!) The sad news is that we and Cutter did not connect at all—he’s a precious and beautiful guy but he just wasn’t our dog and we weren’t his humans. We were heartbroken and figured we’d be heading home setterless. But then we dove back in, sniffed out all the other setters—and we met the guy who WAS waiting for us. Maybe Cutter was the angel who brought us down to Maryland to meet his kennel brother, I don’t know, but I’ll always be grateful for him. So we came home not with Cutter, but with a 3-4 year old setter boy they were calling Harley in the shelter. He told us his name is actually Bernie, and he is a treasure. He was a super good boy on the 8 hour trip home, and he’s just blossoming every minute he’s in his new home. It’s been a crazy and wonderful adventure. I still wish we’d been the people Cutter is waiting for, and vice versa. They’ll come along. I have a feeling he needs a multi-dog household where he can socialize with a gang of 4-leggers; I can imagine him on a farm, even. I’ll keep him in my prayers and tell his story to my friends, because as you know, you never know! :) You are so right that ESARL is a special shelter. We’re now devoted fans and supporters. Jeanne is awesome, and so are the other folks we met. So—thank you for all your help and advice. Without you we’d never have met Cutter OR Bernie. Even though it didn’t turn out the way we all were hoping, it still turned out so wonderfully. I just wish I could take them all. I’ll post more of the story and some pics on the birdog list soon. Very best and be well Jody Hi Jeanne, John, Jackie, and everyone, We thought you’d like to know that the English setter formerly known as Harley, whose new forever name is Bernie (he likes it!), is doing just wonderfully! He was a total good boy on the 8 hour drive home to Massachusetts from ESARL yesterday, and he is adapting beautifully to his new home—he sleeps through the night, is clearly housebroken, and has a wonderful disposition. He seems to know the command “come back” and responds to hand claps and mouth clicks—we think he have have had some clicker training. Tomorrow we’re meeting with a trainer/behaviorist, and will also be taking him to meet his new vet. One of our friends suggested we learn as much about his history as possible, simply so that we can help him heal from whatever might need healing, and help him be his very best (and he’s already pretty great!). I don’t know if it’s possible, but if you could let us know the name of the shelter in New Jersey (?) he came to you from, and a way to identify him to them, I would contact them directly just to see what I can learn. We feel so lucky to have found Bernie/Harley thanks to ESARL. ESARL/Cecil County SPCA is a truly amazing place; the people who work there are extraordinary, and we’ll always be grateful to you. Best wishes Sanford and Jody |

10-29-2007 It is time to say bye to Zen After 14 years of life he went to the Rainbow Bridge to wait for us and spend time with those who went before him. He was only in our lives at the rescue for around a year, but he touched many lives and never will be forgotten and will always hold a special place in my heart as well as many others that were privileged to know him and be with him. 2-28-2008 Hi, We have Molly (blind in one eye) now Lucey, I believe Daisy was a lovely little orange and white female adopted out about the same time to another family. I did send some pictures a while ago and have included them again now if you'd like to use them in your website. We don't have a digital camera so as we get pictures well send you some. Lucey is just about one of the sweetest dogs we have had, she is very appealing and has us wrapped around her little paws (not so little for her size actually). She has come a long way since we adopted her. Lucey is now 98% house-trained, never has chewed on a thing other then dog toys, she has learned to walk pretty well on a leash and she has the run of the farm which is enclosed in high multiflora rose bush or high tinsel electrified fence. Lucey loves the birds and is happy to chase and watch them all day, when she come in for a rest she falls sound a sleep to recoup her energy. She had gotten along well with all humans and dogs that she has met and pays no attention to our horses. Next to chasing birds she loves laying in her humans laps while having a belly rub or taking a nap. Thanks so much for finding this wonderful dogs a home. Wendy W |

2-29-8 Last summer in the beginning of August 2007, I adopted a yellow lab from your established named "Roxy." She had been found on walking on the side of the road; you had not had her very long when I came in and adopted her. I had just had to put my German Shepherd down 2 weeks previously. Roxy was a small lab, about 62 pounds. I have renamed her "Amber" because of the coloring of her coat. I just wanted you to know what she did yesterday. She lives for playing ball, and yesterday morning we were outside throwing the balls in the back yard. While we were playing (about 7:00 a.m.) I could hear a loud knocking. I thought it was some kind of construction work down the street, but it was unusual for that early in the morning. Amber would catch the ball, but she constantly kept going over to the side of the fence, looking at my neighbor's house. She did this about 4 times before I realized she was focusing on my elderly neighbor's house next door. I went over and I could hear a loud knocking coming from inside the house. Amber took me right to the part of the house where the knocking was coming from. As I got there, I could hear my elderly neighbor yelling from inside the house. I immediately called "911" and the paramedics came immediately. We could hear her inside, and she seemed to be coherent. The rescue teams waited until her son got there, so they wouldn't have to break into her house. Anyway, my neighbor, who is 88 years of age, had gotten up early in the morning and had fallen into her bathtub. Due to her mobility problems, she couldn't get out of the tub, and she had been in the tub for over 2 hours trying to get out. She knew I always went outside and played with Amber before I leave for work. When it started getting light outside, she started knocking on the wall and yelling for help. Amber knew something was wrong or maybe she could hear her yelling. Amber has been good about watching out for my neighbor. I would not have stopped to investigate the noise because I thought it was construction. Had it not been for Amber taking me over to that side of the fence, my neighbor would have laid in the bathtub all day, until her family came late in the afternoon. I was very proud of Amber. Amber has been a pleasure since I adopted her last summer, and she is the "star" of the neighborhood right now. I just thought you might like to know about this story. Adoption stories are not always sad; some are a great success. Audrey G.

3-10-2008 Barbara! I had the great privilege of handing Bradley over to his new mom, Pam, just before 6pm. They should almost be home by now. Pam was just beside herself with excitement and joy at finally meeting Bradley. He did settle down for the drive after checking out a variety of chewing toys (he added the water bowl and a blanket to the list of options, LOL!). Sheila took some pictures of Pam and Bradley in the pouring rain, as well as some of Jayne with Bradley during the hand-off in Worcester. Not sure if she got a pic of Holly and Heidi. I was trying to get Bradley to do a pee and didn't even get a chance to see Holly! Sheila's had some computer issues of late, so may be a bit delayed getting them to all of us, but they'll be coming at some point! It was a very smooth transport, and so nice that the miserable weather didn't cause any delays. Nice meeting everyone! Deirdre:) |
